The Internet gives us access to almost unlimited sources of knowledge and learning tools. However, the sheer number of options often leads to decision paralysis and a series of questions.

These doubts are natural. We all want to use effective study methods to learn faster. In this article, you’ll discover advantages of Anki and how it can improve your learning process.

This article covers the most important advantages of Anki as a learning tool. All of the benefits described are based on my several years of personal experience using the application. Let’s begin

Tabel of content

1. What Is Anki?

Anki is a digital flashcards learning tool designed to optimize the timing of information review. It is completely free, except for the iOS version.

On the Apple Store, Anki mobile costs 24,99 dollars (as of March 7, 2026). You can also download Anki from their official website or Google Play.

Users can use the app on both desktop computers and mobile devices. After registration on Ankiweb, it is possible to synchronize flashcards between devices. That was a short introduction. Now let’s discover the benefits of Anki as a learning tool..

2. What makes Anki different from other learning tools?

To understand its value, it’s important to clarify the role Anki plays in the learning process. The best way to describe it is through an analogy: Anki is a blank canvas, and you are the painter. You shouldn’t expect the app to learn for you.

Anki is a tool that, when used correctly, makes learning significantly more effective. Combining Anki with other effective study methods improve memory even more.

Everything you need to learn any subject

It is a major difference between Anki and other learning tools. Most available apps focus on a specific subject while Anki is more versatile. It allows you to learn every subject you can think of, from medicine to art history.

Medical schools are one of the most demanding to graduate. If Anki wasn’t a great tool, thousands of medical students wouldn’t use it every day. They even created special Reddit community only for learning medicine with Anki.

3. One of the biggest advantages of Anki

The main purpose of the app is to optimize the timing of reviewing information. This is a crucial element of long-term retention. Without proper spaced repetition, information is quickly forgotten.

This is where Anki’s biggest strength appears. Its review algorithm is based on the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve.

What is the forgetting curve?

The forgetting curve describes how quickly we lose information over time. We forget most new information surprisingly fast – often within hours. Anki schedules reviews at the optimal moments to maximize long-term retention.

It is the place where most apps fail. They don’t take advantage of the spaced repetition system – the method based on the forgetting curve.

No more time Wasting

By using Anki, you can be confident that your reviews are optimized for long-term memory. The software prioritizes difficult material and shows mastered cards less often. You don’t waste time on inefficient repetition.

You can learn more using Anki while spending the same amount of time compared to other apps. It is especially important when building expertise. To become a true expert, you need to learn as effectively as possible.

4. Building Learning Habit

Big goals are achieved through consistent daily work. The same applies to learning any skill or subject. Anki encourages consistency. If you don’t complete your scheduled reviews, they carry over to the next day.

The growing number of overdue cards discourages procrastination. This system works great for me. In the last 365 days I only skipped 19 days of learning. Of course, motivation should ultimately come from within. However Anki can make achieving personal goals easier.

It also work as your learning habit tracker due to built-in statistics. In the next sections you’ll discover more about this great feature.

5. Reducing the Number of Decisions

When using Anki, you don’t waste time wondering where to start. You either complete your scheduled reviews or add new flashcards. This significantly reduces the number of decisions you need to make.

Activation energy

Anki lowers activation energy – the effort required to begin a task. As a result, you study more frequently. Building habits and reducing the number of decisions create a synergy that make learning more efficient.

6. Personal Knowledge Base

The advantages of Anki grow as you progress. By adding new information, you build your own personal knowledge base.

Advantages of Anki as second brain

Having everything in one place gives you a clear advantage over traditional paper notes. Imagine trying to quickly find a specific piece of information in a notebook — it would take much longer than searching in Anki.

Get rid of pile of notebooks, instead store your knowledge inside Anki.

Access to your accumulated knowledge also makes problem-solving easier. You simply search your database to find relevant information. Moreover, the content is written in your own words, which makes the process even easier.

7. Providing Feedback

One of my favorite advantages of Anki is its statistics. The app offers detailed statistics that show:

  • the scope of your knowledge
  • the pace at which you acquire new information
  • which topics are most challenging
  • the time spent studying
  • your consistency

Trigger for change

This type of data is valuable for any learner. It allows you to improve your learning process. Traditional methods also provide feedback, but rarely in such an automated and immediate way.

Anki tests your knowledge and gives you feedback. You can focus on the most demanding parts of material for you. You don’t waste time and energy for information you have already mastered.

What is more, Anki helps to avoid intellectual arrogance. When you constantly test yourself, you become less certain about your knowledge. Many mistakes come from our overconfidence.

8. Customization

The basic version of the app provides everything needed for effective learning. However, users can expand its functionality through free add-ons.

These add-ons can speed up flashcard creation, enhance statistics, and introduce additional features. Add-ons make learning easier, more effective or simply more funny.

One rule to use add-ons effectively

It’s important not to overcomplicate the system at the beginning. I recommend starting without add-ons and gradually expanding as new needs arise.

It is easy to fall into the rabbit hole of Anki add-ons. Sticking to this rule over time, you’ll create a learning tool perfectly tailored to your needs.

9. Independence

Anki is an open-source project, which means anyone can access its source code. If you have programming skills, this allows for even deeper customization. However, for most users, a different aspect is more important.

Life-long learning tool

If the developers ever stopped maintaining the app, the community could quickly restore it. Unlike many commercial applications, this guarantees independence and long-term stability. You don’t have to worry about your favorite learning tool disappearing overnight.

10. One tool, multiple options

Previously I said that Anki is versatile, in this section I’ll explain why. With Anki, you don’t need to limit yourself to simple digital flashcards like this:

Question: Who is the the king of Sweden?

Answer: King Carl XVI Gustaf

Photo flashcards

Anki supports multimedia within flashcards. Let’s suppose you have geography test. You need to know location of every African country.

In Anki you can create this type of flashcard:

Flashcard testing what country is presented on the photo

Sound flashcards

Imagine you’re an enthusiast of ornithology and would like to practise at home. No problem – you can test yourself from bird voices with Anki.

Question: Whose bird’s voice is this? (mp3 audio)

Answer: Lark

Only creativity limits the usefulness of Anki. You can inspire yourself with other users’ applications. They often share their methods on Reddit community.
